What our Organic Retailer

certification is all about...

Our new status will insure that the Silver City Food Co-op staff will check and verify organic certifiers and strive to preserve the integrity of all organic products sold at the food Co-op.

Let's get the bad news out of the way. Certain areas in the store have become less convenient for our shoppers. The bulk herbs section and the coffee grinder are the spots that may be of concern.

Firstly, in bulk herbs the scoops have been removed. By preventing the same scoop from moving between organic and non-organic product, we maintain the purity of our organic herbs. Please ask in the kitchen for a clean scoop to use for each herb if one is needed.
With regard to the coffee grinder, we can no longer allow coffee purchased outside the Co-op to be ground in our grinder. Because we cannot verify the content of outside coffee, this is the only way to insure the organic integrity of our grinder. So, give our yummy organic coffee a try and grind at will.

Now let us get into the good news! The Silver City Food Co-op obtained organic certification from the New Mexico Organic Commodity Commission on July 11, 2003. That makes us the first independent retailer to be certified organic by the state of New Mexico. HURRAY!!! While the Silver City Food Co-op will still stock non-organic and part-organic products, our new status will insure that the Silver City Food Co-op staff will check and verify organic certifiers and strive to preserve the integrity of all organic products sold at the food Co-op.

We apologize for any inconvenience these changes present you. At the Silver City Food Co-op, maintaining our new certification and providing dependable, certified organic products to the Silver City community, is a top priority. Please seek assistance from our friendly staff when confusion occurs and enjoy shopping at the first independent retailer certified organic in the state of New Mexico.
