The 7th Cooperative Principle is “Concern for Community”. The Silver City Food Co-op lives up to this principle by being actively involved in our community through a variety of outreach programs and initiatives, sponsorships and donations.
Most recently the Silver City Food Co-op has been involved in the creation of a Grant County Community Food Pantry. The SCFC also supports other organizations providing invaluable social services including The Volunteer Center, the Mission, Life Quest, El Refugio, and S.N.A.P. (Spaying and Neutering Program).
Our Co-op Kids program raises money to provide organic fresh fruit for Alimento Para El Nino, a program that gives supplemental food to elementary school children for the weekend, and for Big Brothers Big Sisters and the children’s program at the battered women’s shelter.
The SCFC is committed to providing certified organic food and was the first retail store in New Mexico to be Certified Organic, insuring the integrity of the Organic food that we offer to our customers. We also promote and encourage local food production. Our Farm to Co-op Partnering Program helps cover some of the growers’ costs to become Registered or Certified Organic and we support the New Mexico Organic Farming Conference, the Silver City Farmer’s Market, community gardens in Grant County and the Gila Sustainability Network and Farm to Table, organizations involved in food security issues.
The Silver City Food Co-op contributes to local environmental conservation organizations and participates in various events that promote a greater awareness of the environment we live in including the Earth Day Celebration at Penny Park, the Gila Resources Information Project and the Viva Verde Expo, the Upper Gila Watershed Alliance and the Gila River Festival, and the Gila Conservation Education Center and the Gila Water Festival.
The Silver City Food Co-op also supports a wide variety of arts, music, and cultural events in and around town including the Red Paint Pow Wow, the Tour of the Gila bicycle race, the Mimbres Region Arts Council’s Annual Blues Fest, Pickamania Bluegrass Festival, and Youth Mural Project, the WNMU Jazz Festival, The Silver City Short Film Festival, the Friends of the Library’s Annual Literacy Alive event, poetry slams, the Southwest Women’s Fiber Arts Collective’s Tapestry of Talent fashion show, and so many more.
In addition, the Silver City Food Co-op is committed to providing an ongoing venue for education. Each month in our Community Room, we host Community Forums with guest speakers that are free and open to anyone in the community.
