Community Partnerships

The 7th Cooperative Principle is “Concern for Community”. The Silver City Food Co-op has formed partnerships with various organizations in Grant County that promote the health and well being of the people, animals and the physical environment of our community.

  • The Volunteer Center and the co-op are currently working together on three projects: Alimento Para El Nino, providing supplemental food for elementary school children and their families, the Community Gift Card Program, funded by a co-op member, providing women head of households with a monthly gift card to shop at the co-op, and the Grant County Community Food Pantry opening April 4th, 2009.
  • The Mission, which runs a local soup kitchen, receives produce and other food from the co-op.
  • The Gila Resources Information Project (GRIP) is the host of the Viva Verde Expo, a weeklong educational conference on “Green Living in Southern New Mexico”; the co-op is supporting and participating in this event.
  • Lone Mountain Natives, Silver City Farmers Market, Silver City Recycling Task Force and the Silver City Food Co-op came together to organize the 2009 Earth Day Celebration in Penny Park on April 25th with GRIP as the sponsor and promoter.
  • Health Reach and the co-op have collaborated on outreach projects to educate health care providers on the topics of diabetes and obesity.
  • The co-op is a member of the Silver City/Grant County Chamber of Commerce.
  • The Silver City Food Co-op participates in the Aldo Leopold High School and Meadowhawk Middle School internship programs that bring students to the co-op to work and learn.
  • The co-op employs clients of Life Quest, a non-profit, community agency that provides services and supports to people with developmental disabilities.
  • Our Co-op Kids program supports Big Brothers Big Sisters, El Refugio Rosie’s Children’s program, as well as Alimento Para El Nino.
  • The co-op’s 5 cent bag refund program raises money for various organizations including S.N.A.P. (Spaying and Neutering Animal Program) by giving customers a 5 cent refund token for using their own shopping bags.
